The Space Environment

This film takes us to another world, or just the moon perhaps. Most nights I look up there and wonder what it would be like to stay on the moon. From the stories of the Apollo moon landings, I get a sense of isolation and quietness. The film Moon gives viewers a glimpse of what living on the moon in the future could be like. The film displays its view on the surrounding environment and a "humans" way of living on the moon.
Without even paying attention to the title of the movie, the setting can be pretty obvious. The film shows way everyone pictures as the moon from looking at videos and pictures of the moon landings. There is the darkness of space above and the brightness of the sunlight reflecting off the surface. The outside environment in the movie is dominated by the light from the sun due to the fact that all He-3 is in sunlight. The movie gives an idea of where the character is at in reference to the sun with shadows appearing under vehicles and next to transmitters. Just watching the main character Sam drive around showed the isolation and the strange world around him.
Even inside the building it looks like living in space. From watching the film, it felt like being in Princess Leia's ship at the beginning of Star Wars. Even if the film did not show outside even once, the setting of where the station was out would not be in question. The color white dominated the entire film. I always wondered if Sam thought that was his favorite color or that he would go crazy seeing white everywhere. It makes sense in a way because the color of the station goes well with the surrounding lunar environment.
This probably was my first film at observing what it would be like to temporarily live on the moon. Life on the moon does not look that part apart from the fact that there probably would not be that much gravity on the moon. Maybe something could be done on the inside to enhance gravity but even on the moon's surface apart from the fact that it is the Moon, motions on the surface are pretty similar to Earth. A downside to living on the moon is that everything would involve being inside. For the most part, Sam is living inside the station. Whenever he is outside he is imprisoned inside his spacesuit with no exposure to space. His whole life for those three years revolved around being indoors. Another side note, for me it would be hard not having Earth weather at all for three years.
The performance of Sam throughout the movie is dependent of the setting. The isolation and quietness of the moon itself is reflected onto Sam. I can see the difference between the old Sam and the newly awoken Sam. Sam after living on the moon for three years is tamer and more settled than the younger Sam. I feel like living on the moon could provide more solitude than noisy Earth would. The real Sam definitely had a huge change of lifestyle to live on the moon for a couple years.

Uprising in the U.K.

The world is in chaos and turmoil. In the film the United Kingdom's government is left standing. Peace and order cannot last forever. For instance, there are rebellions and uprisings in most countries. Every country has some form of group that doesn't conform with a national government. Children of Men brought a glimpse of government falling apart by civil conflicts.
We see it happening all over the globe with the Middle East, Asia, Africa, etc. Nations going into a civil war or other forms of conflict. Children of Men showed how humanity is vulnerable when there is imminent doom and disaster. In the film there is a state of mind that nothing matters anymore and all of humanity will end up dead. This is like a last breath for people to steal and kill. The human mind has lost sanity. This gives a reason for civilians to take up arms and riot against the government or any form of higher power.
Throughout the film, the United Kingdom's government is crumbling. The government does its best to keep order with keeping the immigrants out. The rebellion starts from the inside instead. The rebels trying to tract down Theo and Kee end up involved in a street fight against the military. These few minutes of the film were an impact to me because it shows that any powerful country can fall. The film gives the scene a realistic viewpoint. It is like the cameraman is running alongside of Theo with the shaking motion. The music gives an eerie and anticipative feeling to the scene. The surrounding environment shows the poverty of what the country has come down to. Just watching the film, I wouldn't believe that anything like this would happen in the western world.
The scene acknowledges Theo's attempt to save humanity. At the beginning of the scene, its about them taking cover from the incoming shots. Theo shows a great courage as he goes onto the trek on his own to rescue the baby. The streets are covered with soldiers, rebels, tanks, and debris. It is amazing to see a civilian display that much courage. Theo could have easily hid along with other civilians hiding in the streets. This was the courage that Kee saw in Theo when others didn't. Kee trusted in Julian and knew she could trust in Theo. Theo saw this as the last attempt to save humanity and he took that chance.
From before this scene of the movie is a reality check. There may be a time in our country's future where internal conflict can happen and chaos erupts everywhere. Looking at history, no civilization or empire has lasted to today. In one way or another, every country has gone through a revolution and changed. Revolution can come with a price. If there is a reason to fight, people will do it. In Children of Men the hysteria and fear of extinction led people to fight each other. The film's scenario of infertility may not be an issue in the future but any spark of fear and hostility and lead to an internal conflict.

Mechanical Love

The emotion of love is both obvious and mysterious. From http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/love, love can be a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection.  People have that unconditional love for family and friends. At other times love can be difficult to find. In one form or another all humans are able to experience love. On that website, the same definition mentioned about love towards a parent, child, friend, etc. Artificial Intelligence took that idea of an android displaying love for a parent. This brings up the discussion of whether a robot can share the same emotion of love that living humans possess.
From the movie, the robot boy David shows a love that many young boys have for their family. The parents were skeptic at first at having a robot child but David's love began to change them. A child's love for their mother is one of the greatest loves that is out there. A mother's love shows comfort, security, happiness, and countless others. I took the main meaning to this movie to be: an unconditional love between mother and son and the journey to hold onto that love. David was just a normal boy wanting the love in return from his mother.
The problem with this love is the fact that David is not a normal human being. Monica could not face the truth of artificial intelligence having love for her. It made things worse having her biological son there. With the brothers standing side-by-side, she saw a difference between them even though they shared the same exact love for her. If she would have realized the journey that David carried on to one day see her again, she would have taken it back in a heartbeat. Monica, like many others would have, saw that this love was not "real".
In the definition of love, there is no where written on where that love should come from. This of course is a time that androids replicating humans is an imagination. When the times comes there will be a debate of whether A.I. is able to love. David showed in the movie how "real" his love can be. His emotions were so believable that even the crowd at the demolition festival saw David as a real boy and found it to be shameful to harm a child. He was seen as a real child in the eyes of a caretaker android and a girl with her father. To all three of them, they saw David as a lost child finding with way back to his mother.
I saw the fact that if both adopted parents had no idea he was a robot, they would have seen him as human. David had the innocence, the character, and emotions of a child. The parents could have easily seen him as just another adopted child. There was that mask that Monica saw that David wasn't real and his love wasn't enough for her. Monica eventually witnessed that love and at the end enjoyed her time with David as if he was her real son. By definition and what David had to offer, his love was as real as it could be.

The Blade Runner Blog

The Blade Runner took a unique look into the near future. This dystopian film captures the falling of clones/androids on our society. The film gets an average rating. The emotions that the movie displayed, showed the frightening scenario of that future. The movie was meant to play under darker light but it seemed to dark. The constant rain also displayed the melancholy atmosphere but constant rain does not make up Los Angeles' climate. The movie had a future-like exterior but a present-like interior within the buildings. A good example is the police station near the beginning of the film.
The movie has hidden question within the story as well. There is the suspicion of Ford's character being a replicant. One reason is his lack of emotion for most of the film and the fact that he never took the emotion and eye test as well. The movie is also telling what society may look like in time. Ethnicities are drawing closer and closer to each other. Blade Runner presents a society where languages and races are coming together. Different languages are spoken at the Japanese bar at the beginning of the film. The film also brings up the hope of flying cars in the future. For the most part, flying cars with only be used by the rich or the government.
What caught my attention in the film was the use of clones or androids. I believe the cloning could become even more of a discussion in the future. Watching the movie made me think of The Island. That movie was about clones that were of the same genetic makeup of real humans. I connected the replicants in Blade Runner to those clones. In reality the replicants are not human. In their minds, just like in The Island, they feel like they are real humans. The replicants have the motivation like real humans and wanting to live longer. The replicants also enjoyed the luxuries that everyday humans possess. At the beginning the one replicant had a home, another replicant enjoyed dancing, and a third also enjoyed dancing and theater. Both movies deliver a fine line between human and clone.
Being the first future film so far, there's that understanding of how today will affect the future. If that film was shot today, our idea of the future would look very different compared to the movie's idea. The technology in the film replicates technology of the 80s. For example there are no touchscreens or HD televisions. With the American way of life, foreign languages and cultures would not completely dominate an American city. The buildings in the movie looked very future-like. It is very unlikely for a building like the corporation building to look like that in the near future.
Though the future looks very primitive I do keep in mind that the movie is 30 years old. A sci-fi movie today that would try to portray 2043 may look very different than expected as well. The idea of cloning for slavery is what I take most from it. Cloning for slavery can be looked at as a morality issue in the future. It can lead to a discussion between human and non human. It is an issue currently and it can certainly become a larger issue in the distant future.
